Until December 31st, we have HeinOnline on trial. This is a legal information source with a bias towards US legislation. Its content includes a large number of law journals also contains the Congressional Record Bound volumes in entirety, complete coverage of the U.S. Reports back to 1754, legal classics from the 16th to the 20th centuries, the United Nations and League of Nations Treaty Series, all United States Treaties, the Federal Register from inception in 1936, the CFR from inception in 1938, and much more. Access, as is the norm with database trials, is restricted to on-campus only.

Science Direct on trial

We have another database trial on the go at the moment.  It's Science Direct, which provides access to journals and books published by Elsevier, who are a bigname in the publishing world.  It's also fair to say that Elsevier are very well known to librarian and researchers

Access is available on campus, and theoretically you could try off-campus with your Athens account too.  Bear in mind that this is a particular subset of Science Direct - College Edition Complete, so I've no idea how much of the content is available to you, so I suggest you restrict any searching/browsing to Full-Text Access.

New database trial

For three weeks the library is trialling EMIS, a comprehensive research tool which focuses on the Emerging Markets; find leading coverage in Central & Eastern Europe, Latin America, Middle East, Asia and Africa.

• All data sets are combined meaning students and academics can access company, industry and macroeconomic data in one place.
• Company data has public and private companies with full financials i.e. annual statements, financial statements etc. The company database is used across all major investment banks in the UK and US because there are profiles that are usually hard to find e.g. private companies in China.
• Industry data has peer analysis, concertation analysis , benchmarking and full industry reports. Meaning industries from different countries can be compared, the top companies seen, how much market they have, sales etc.
• Industry reports are aggregated from international and local provider including Market line, Euromonitor, BMI research
• Macro economics data for all emerging countries including filters like FDI inward by country, GDP, work force etc which can be cross compared.by country In addition to this, reports from Oxford Economics and Dun and Bradstreet are aggrgated
• M&A database market leading for developing countries

Database Trial

For the next couple of weeks we have Fame (UK/Ireland) and Orbis (global) company information databases on trial.  The URLS are embedded in the above images, but you'll need a username (dublinschool1) and password (dublinschool1) [dublinschool2 to 5 will also work].  I can confidently reveal the usernames and passwords, as you can only access these databases on-campus, so sorry, non-DBS lurkers!  

New trial: EBSCO e-book business collection

For the next month, well, until 5th December, we are trialling EBSCO's eBook Business Collection.  This collection includes over 12,000 e-books on subjects such as marketing, finance, supply chain management and entrepreneurship and also focusing on career growth, personal development, communication and networking.

Trial: Credo Reference

Another resource trial for DBS Library users: Credo Reference is an online reference resource providing full-text online versions of nearly 1200 published reference works from more than 70 publishers in every major subject, including general and subject dictionaries, thesauri, encyclopaedias, quotations and atlases. Plus a wide range of subject-specific titles covering everything from the arts to accountancy, science to Shakespeare and law to literature. The trials consists of all resources in the General Reference collection as well as the Business Subject collection (so science, Shakespeare, law and literature may only be a bit of alliterative hyperbole) You know the score: on-campus only. We've gone trial-mad at library towers (and we're not finished yet). Our Academic Complete ebook trial is extended until the end of January. Remember ebrary from November? Scholarly e-book database? Read these online or download either chapters (40 pages maximum) as imaged PDFs (so no cutting and pasting) or as Adobe Digital Editions format documents? Of course you remember. And you also remember that you need download the free Adobe Digital Editions software before you can use this format. You also remember that and you can't read these on your Kindle, but you'll be able to read them on most other devices. We never did add them to the library catalogue, but if we do purchase any titles we'll add them to the library catalogue. I'll just confirm the link for ebrary shortly.

Until 9th February - a two week extension we also have a trial of JustCite, "an innovative legal citator", or, in other words a legal research platform brought to you by the creators of Justis. It's a a legal search engine, with built-in citation index functionality, that focuses on case law and legislation from common law jurisdictions around the world. I imagine it will be very useful to you if you're a law student.

More resource trials

We've gone trial happy here.  Another two to talk about. As ever, they are available on-campus only.

Both come from the nice people at Pro-Quest.  The first is Academic Complete, an award-winning scholarly e-book database, yeah, more ebooks.  You can read these online or download them, either chapters (40 pages maximum) as imaged PDFs (so no cutting and pasting) or as Adobe Digital Editions format documents (for a maximum of 14 days).  You will need to download the free Adobe Digital Editions software before you can use this format.  Oh and you can't read these on your Kindle, but you'll be able to read them on most other devices.  However there's a large number of books to browse (+80,000) and we'll see about adding some of them to the library catalogue temporarily.  Academic Complete is available until the end of the month.

The second is the Entertainment Industry Magazine Archive which is:

The Entertainment Industry Magazine Archive is an archival research resource containing the essential primary sources for studying the history of the film and entertainment industries, from the era of vaudeville and silent movies through to 2000. Includes the core US and UK trade magazines covering film, music, broadcasting and theater are all included, together with film fan magazines and music press titles. Magazines have been scanned cover-to-cover in high-resolution color, with granular indexing of all articles, covers, ads and reviews.

Resource Trial: Henry Stewart Talks Marketing and Management Collection

Until the end of the year we are trialing the Henry Stewart Talks Ltd. Marketing and Management Collection. This is a collection of over over 600 specially prepared audio-visual lectures, organised into 59 comprehensive series and delivered by a) principals, managers and advisors from the business world and b) leading academics. It makes available a wide range of detailed, practical knowledge on subjects as diverse as Change Management, Strategy as Practice, Organizational Behaviour, Business Ethics, Information Technology, Bargaining and Negotiations, Business Continuity and Risk Management, Data Mining, Branding and Product Specialisation in Hotels, Retail Marketing, Bayesian Analysis, Sport Marketing, Practical Pricing and Revenue Management, Pharmaceutical Marketing, Supply Chain Management and Export Marketing to name just a few series.
We've added each of the lectures to our catalogue, so you can find details of all the talks here Alternatively to search for specific themes or topics, in the advanced search, find and tick 'E-Stream Recording' in the drop-down Media type menu and enter your terms in the the 'Search terms' box. The talks also come with printable slide handouts in PDF format.

Resource Trial: BBC College of Journalism

We have, for the next month a trial of the BBC College of Journalism.  I copy and paste from the BBC website (as an aside, note that this isn't plagiarism because I'm linking to the original source and indenting copied text.  Were this an assignment or dissertation I would provide a reference to the BBC webpage  at the end of this post))

The College of Journalism, part of the BBC Academy, oversees training for the BBC’s entire editorial staff.
This website focuses on best practice in core editorial skills, and offers an overview of specialist areas as well as legal and ethical issues.
It is a site about BBC journalism for BBC journalists, but is available to everyone

It is available to DBS staff and students until 24th October and is available on-campus only.

JSTOR Trial

Happy New Year! Gosh, we've been quiet recently.  I like to think that is because the Library is a well-oiled machine that does not require much input.  You, of course, may have a different view.

Anyway, this is a short post to say that we have a trial of more JSTOR material. For the next two weeks we will have access to JSTOR Arts and Sciences collections IX and X.  These will be available primarily on-campus only (this is is the nature of trials, I'm afraid) though you should be able to access these collections through the search box on the library home page or the advanced search page.  Unfortunately, they will not be accesible through Athens.

You know, I enjoyed writing about JSTOR so much, when I find the time, I'll write another post about JSTOR.

Netlibrary ebook & audiobook trial

Stop me if you've heard this one before, but the nice people at EBSCO have given us trial access to their Netlibrary ebook and audiobook platform.  Take it away EBSCO!

Containing around 500 of the 350,000 eBook/eAudiobook titles, this trial will allow you to view the functionality and features of subscribing to eBooks/eAudiobooks via EBSCOhost, including:
• Cross-searching databases and eBooks together to get a single Results list (within EHIS or for EBSCO only products)
• Download eBooks to Apple devices, eBook tablets and Mobile Phones
• How the EBSCOhost interface has been enhanced to handle eBooks, offering familar options to students.

The trial will be available until 16th December.  The links have been integrated into EBSCO, so when you use the library home page search box, your results will include ebooks and audiobooks (if they match) but if you like, you can directly access the ebook trial here, or if you prefer audiobooks only, click here  (off-campus,  login with your student number and date of birth. 

EBSCOHost ebook trial

We have an ebook trial on the go at the moment. Yes, it's an odd time of year for a trial, but that's out of our hands unfortunately. Anyway, EBSCO have branched out into e-books and so are offering access to a wide number of such books through their EBSCOHost platform. The trial can be accessed from any EBSCO database, from the link in the top right corner, cunningly entitled Netlibrary ebook trial (once it replaces the "Dublin Business School" text. To use an Internet acronym YMMV (Your mileage may vary); I don't know what's available; Gross's Themes, Issues and Debates in Psychology is there, but otherwise it's a bit of a lucky dip. The trial will run until July and should be available to you off-campus. Also as far as I can tell, a book can only be read online. If I discover otherwise, I'll let you know

skills4studycampus part 2

To access the resource described in yesterday's post, go to this link and launch the application (if it doesn't launch automatically). You will need to register in order to look at the site (I did say it was a highly personalised resource :-). Access is on campus only, but I'll clarify that.

New trial: skills4studycampus.

Perhaps just before the start of the exams is not ideal, but from tomorrow (pm) we will be beginning a trial of skills4studycampus, which is an interactive e-learning resource for students that aims to improve students' understanding of core skills needed for successful study, specifically, writing, critical thinking, reading & note taking and referencing & plagiarism. Students are encouraged to complete a wide variety of interactive activities, tests and assessments, to keep personal notes, tags and a learning journal. The learning experience is therefore highly personalised and focused on their individual needs. More details shortly.

Database Trial - Financial Times Historical Archive 1888 - 2006

For the month of March, the Library has trial access to the Financial Times Historical Archive, 1888-2006 for the month of March.

This online facsimile edition of the FT is fully-searchable and offers the complete run of the London edition of the paper, from its first issue to the end of 2006. You can access this database either from college, home or work via username and password. To obtain login details go to 'Search All Resources' or contact the library
