Access to Mintel

For reason too complicated and too boring to expand upon, Mintel is no longer available through Athens.  Instead you can access Mintel by logging into Moodle and clicking the link in the Library Resources box on the top right of the home page.  Happy Mintelling!

A short note about using Mintel and Passport GMID on Athens

The short note is this: registration is required before use.  For Mintel it's a one-off, and merely entails entering name and email address, course and course end-date.  And that's it.  Here's an access guide  that says pretty much the same thing, but it's better written and has pictures.
For Passport GMID, you need to create an account, entering similar information.  However you'll need your email address to login to Passport each time you want to use this resource.  An added complication is that personal emails - from the likes of Yahoo, Hotmail and Gmail will be rejected.  Use either your @mydbs.ie or your business email address.  Personally, I'd use my mydbs.ie account.

MINTEL

In the immortal words of Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth, good news everyone! Mintel is now available through EBSCOHost Integrated Search (EHIS). We're waiting on the IT department's web specialist adding Mintel (and a few other databases) to the search box on the library home page and indeed the list of databases on the advanced search page too. In the interim, to find Mintel on EHIS, go to the EHIS link on the e-library page

A period of transition

We think the new library website is much better than the old one. There's various changes that we have made, including a search box on the main page and a new 'Search All Resources'. As a consequence of this, we've had to change how a few databases are accessed off-campus. For the moment, access to Warc, Justis, Mintel and Westlaw will be through Moodle (Westlaw can also be searched off-campus via the new search interface). If you are asked for a password for Justis or Westlaw, please contact library staff.

Mintel 'Global Market Navigator' Trial access

The library has trial access to Mintel's 'Global Market Navigator' database from today until next Tuesday (August 11th).

Global Market Navigator provides comprehensive access to market research reports, market segmentation, forecast and economic data for 22 industries and 54 countries. Reports can be generated which compare industry and country data and all results can be exported as charts or spreadsheets.

So, if you want to compare Compound Annual Growth Rates (CAGR) for beer and wine in Ireland and the UK (we are not guzzling quite as much of the stuff as our national reputation might imply it seems) email laura.rooney@dbs.ie for access details.

New features on MINTEL

Want to find reports on Tourism In Ireland, Bottled water sales in France, Energy consumption in Australia, Chocolate and confectionary in the UK, Cough and cold remedies in the US? These and a whole host of other industry and region specific market research reports are now available with a new addition to MINTEL reports called 'snapshots'.

We are currently running trial access to this new feature on MINTEL and would like your feedback on whether you think it is a valuable addition.
Remember if you dont access these trials or give us your feedback on new features, we may not have any real data to inform our decision to subscribe or not. So if you access 'Snapshots' reports and like them - please let us know.

- Please note that due to a problem with the Mintel database and our default settings on library PC's, it cannot be accessed on campus while using internet explorer as your internet browser. To access, log onto the net using Mozilla firefox as your browser. To access Mintel off campus login through the 'search all resources' button with your student number and date of birth then scroll down and click the link to Mintel.

Database Issues

A couple of issues have arisen with access to databases:

Lexis-Nexis: We would greatly prefer you to access Lexis-Nexis through WebFeat rather than asking for the user name and password. To access Lexis-Nexis through Webfeat, enter your search term and scroll through the list of databases, tick the box next to the Lexis-Nexis database (Butterworths or News and Business) and search. Viewing any of results will take you in to the Lexis-Nexis database itself. From there, you can search within Lexis-Nexis as if you had logged into with a username and password.

Mintel: Due to, we suspect some background technical changes made, Mintel no longer works with Internet Explorer on campus. It does work with Firefox and so we will be restoring Firefox to all student PCs in the next week or so.

Search all resources: This opens in a separate window and may be minimised, so be careful! If nothing appears to be happening, check the tabs at the bottom of the screen
