We've noticed that our (gentle) emails - to help you remember about the due date of your library items, or to let you know about overdue items on your account - are directed mainly to spam folders.
To prevent this, just check your spams, see if an email comes from thelibrary@gmail.com and if it does, then right click on the email in question to authorise it, so that in the future... you can receive our notes to you, straight away!
Any question, just come to the desk or email us at library@dbs.ie

Avoid fines, especially when they double during exam time!
It is soon the time for your summer exams to start (good luck!) so to prevent more stress here are a few tips to avoid having to pay fines on overdue library items, especially because fines double during exam time (so that we can ensure fair and equitable access to library materials to all of you!)Library books can be renewed:
- online (click on the 'Access my library account' icon on the library website and login with the same login as your Moodle logins)
- at the self-issuing stations with your student card
- by telephoning the relevant library site (01-417 7572 for AS library / 01-417 8745 for DS library)
The doubling of fines for 2011 will start being enforced on Thursday 21st April 2011.
Standard Loan (2-week) €1.20/day/book
7-day Loan €1.20/day/book
3-day Loan €3.00/day/book
1-day Loan (DVDs) €5.00/day/DVD
And remember, fines are charged on each item returned late and overdue items may not be renewed where a library account has a fine balance exceeding €5.00.

Oh the weather outside is frightful...
I was going to say but the library is so delightful, but you all know that already. We're in a period of bad weather, so it's understandable if returning library books is not your top priority right now. Here are a couple of tips to avoid overdue books:
* double check the due date of your books and make sure to renew them online before they become overdue
* don't borrow 3-day loan items if you are not sure to be able to come back to the Library after three days (as 3-day loans are not renewable!)
You can renew books yourself online. Just click on the 'Access my library account' iconon the Library website homepage and login with the same login details as the ones you use for Moodle and for the College PCs (you can also find a detailed guide on how to renew online in print in the Library or on the Library website).
If you are having difficulties renewing your items online, email us at library@dbs.ie or call us at: AS Library: 01-4177572 / DS Library: 01-4178745
We will look sympathetically on students who can't make it into the library, but obviously the more notice you give us, the more sympathetic we'll be.

Overdues - again
We need to clear up some confusion about receiving overdue notices on Monday about DVDs that you are told are due back on Monday.
DVDs are day loan material, which means they are due back on the following day. You borrow them on a Monday, they are due back on a Tuesday. You borrow them on a Tuesday, they are due back on a Wednesday and so on. Our library management system is therefore programmed to think that DVDs borrowed on a Friday are due back on a Saturday, so on our system they are due back on a Saturday. Because we love you so much (yes, it's true) we let you keep DVDs borrowed on a Friday until Monday. Who wants to come into the library on a weekend if they don't have to? Come Monday however, our system sees them as overdue, and as we have automated our overdue process, you see the email. Like the previous entry on overdues, below, don't worry about it (so long as you return your DVDs on Monday). We'll look into a fix for this though

Overdues
We owe some of you an apology; a small number of library users may have received overdue notices dated 21st March 2010 concerning current loans that are overdue. If your loans have a due date after 02/02/10, then they're not overdue and if can ignore any message dated 21/st March 2010. We're investigating the causes and once again apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Email again
From tomorow we will be sending overdue notices by email. By default they will be sent to your @mydbe.ie account. If we have another email address for you on record, we'll also send any overdues notices there, but please have your @mydbs.ie emails activated and checked on a regular basis.

Happy new year, happy new email
A happy new year to all our returning and new students. We hope you all had a nice xmas and that Santa was good to you. Santa was good to us in the library as he brought (or rather, restored) to us library management system email functionality. "Huh?" I hear you say. What this means, after as we set it up (again) and test that it works smoothly, is that we can send automated email reminders to you when you have items due back in the library soon. It doesn't make sense to send reminders for DVDs borrowed overnight, nor at the moment will we remind you of the due-dates of three-day loan items, but three days before your standard and week loan items are due back in the library we'll send you an email saying that your loans are shortly due back. Hopefully we'll get this working by the end of the week.
Once we've sorted the reminder emails, we'll start on automating our overdue procedures. As soon as you have an item overdue, you'll receive an email saying as such. Follow-up emails will appear at regular intervals.
Informing you of due-dates or overdues by text messaging, as we do for book reservations, is not feasible at the moment, but it's something that hopefully will be possible in the future.

Due dates and overdues
Some students don't think it's fair that they get charged for overdue books when they don't receive reminders that their books are due back or indeed email notice that their books are overdue. Life is, at times, very unfair.
It is the student's responsibility to ensure that they know when their books are due back and also the student's responsibility to return their books on their due date.
There are a number of steps you can take to discover the due date of your loans:
1) There is a date sheet near the front of the book (or rarely, at the back of the book), on which the return date is stamped. You should check that the efficient and enthusiastic library staff member who issued your books has stamped the return date here. If you have renewed your books by phone, or online, you should write the new due date on the date sheet
2) If you are using the self-issuing station, if you actively end your session, a receipt will appear. If you merely walk off with your books, your session will time out and no receipts will be issued. If, in the unusual event of no receipt being issued, you should ask a member of library staff to stamp the book for you. If you request a receipt by email and don't receive a receipt by email, please don't wait until your books are overdue before telling us that you didn't receive a receipt.
3) On, or near, the date sheet, the name, address and telephone number of the library is stamped. You can telephone the library issue desk and ask when your books are due back. For Aungier St. the issue desk telephone number is 01 417 7572. You may also ring 01 417 7594. For Dame St., the issue desk number is 01 417 8745.
4) If you have a PIN, you can look at your reader record via the online library catalogue. To acquire a PIN, contact the library, via telephone above, or by e-mail (there's an 'email the library' option on the online catalogue. With a PIN, you can see what books you have on loan, their due dates. If permissible there's even the option to renew loans
At the time of writing, DBS students have 4986 items on loan. Do you honestly expect us to check the due dates of every single item? Please try to be a little more proactive about this. Many thanks
