Movement
We have lots of summer jobs on at the moment. After typing this, I'm off to proofread the new improved library website, which we think you'll like (for example it has an online PC and room booking system). Another summer job, and the subject of this short posting, is moving the printing and photocopying room. It's no longer going to be at the top of the library, but in the office next to the DVD collection. So coming into the library turn left and then turn right at the DVDs, simple. The move is in progress even as I type.

New print system: Important
Don't shoot the messenger here, but when the upgraded print management system was installed, the default print mode was set to colour. Yes, colour printing is default. Colour printing costs 25c per sheet as opposed to 7c per sheet for black and white. Hence you may want to change the print mode back to black and white before you print anything. Select 'Print' and 'Preferences' and under the 'Quality' tab, select 'Greyscale' to save money. You will need to do this each time you want to print. We'll see if we can get this amended soon. Wish us luck on this great endeavour.

Passwords - a reminder
At DBS, there are a variety of resources available to the student. Here's a gentle reminder of how to access what's available.
Moodle: Moodle is a virtual learning environment. Here you might find material pertaining to your courses. What's there though very much depends upon the individual lecturer. What's probably there though is previous year's exam papers for you to cast your eye over. If you're looking for exam papers, don't look on your individual course, click the exams link instead and look at the appropriate area e.g. undegraduate arts or postgraduate business studies. Unlike other resources in this list you define your username and password. To access Moodle, you need to have an active mydbs.ie mail account account. Go here to activate your account. Please remember the answer to your security question and please choose a memorable username and password. Our IT department will love you for it. Here's a nice tutorial on Moodle.
PCs and Printing: To login to a PC and to print, you will need to have a student account. Your username will be your student number and your password will be your date of birth. If you don't have have an account set up, inform our friendly and efficient information desk staff know, and you should be set up soon after.
WebFeat: WebFeat is what we in the library use as an access management system, to allow access to all our electronic resources off-campus. Again, your username is your student number and password is your date of birth. Bulk uploads of new users are done on a weekly basis. If you do not have a WebFeat login, give your student number and date of birth to our issue desk staff or email the library. A temporary login can be supplied.
Dawsonera: Dawsonera is our electronic book platform. This is a bit more complicated, so pay attention! If you started before January, chances are you are set up on Dawsonera with your username being your first initial followed by your surname, or your first name followed by your surname. Thus, if your name is Brian Cowan, your username is probably bcowan or briancowan and your password is your student number. If you enrolled in January or after, your username should be your student number and your password should be your date of birth.

Library changes
We are making a few changes to operational procedures in the Aungier St library. As you are aware, we have two desks. One desk, the main desk is an Information desk, and the other desk is for issuing and returning books. We are increasing the separation of function between the two desks, so that the main desk will be purely for information only. Thus:
- All financial transactions will be done at the Issue Desk. That is, all fine payments, cash, and credit card, and all purchases of printing tokens will be done here. If you want to pay by phone, the number of the Issue Desk is 01 417 7594
- The Restricted Access collection will be moved into the Short Loan section. As the Issue Desk will be manned permanently, we ask that any book you want to take from the short loan area be issued on your account first.
- A colour printer will shortly be available to students. The printer that will be set up thus is the printer that currently resides behind the Information Desk. This printer will not be replaced. Therefore, there will be no more printing at the Information Desk. We're setting up a print station, next to our newspaper stand, where you can go to print exactly what you need in colour, and I say "exactly what you need in colour" because printing from the colour printer will cost 25 cent a sheet, even if you print in black and white. Only use the colour printer for pages that you want to print in colour.

Library PC access and printing
Over the summer changes have been made to the way students login in to PCs in the library and indeed the wider college campus. Instead of using "student" or "internet" to login, students should now use their student number and date of birth (in dd/mm/yyyy format). It should go without saying that you should log off after you finish your session. If you cannot login, (and are a DBS registered student for academic year 2008-2009) give your name, student number and date of birth to library staff. If you are not registered for 2008-2009, you should consider why you are in the library in the first instance. In time, the "student" and "internet" logins will be withdrawn.
We have changed, and hopefully substantially improved our print management system. We are now using a system named Papercut. You will be able to access your Papercut account once you have logged in with your user name and student number. All students have been given €2.00 free credit. You may now see the importance of logging off after you finish your computer session: if you don't log off, someone else will be able to print from your account. Top-up vouchers can be purchased at the library issue desk.
