This has come up a couple of times recently in the content of searching for e-dissertations (I can eke out another short post about that however), and so merits escalating to a blog post (DEFCON 3 is next).
We have had a couple of queries from user who have been unable to use the guided search or advanced search options and the drop down boxes for media or field selection have been greyed (grayed?) out. Here's a couple of suggestions to resolve matters:
1) Change browsers. Switch to Firefox or Chrome as this problem has only cropped up with Internet Explorer. If I may editorialise briefly, you should consider switching to Firefox or Chrome as both are better than Internet Explorer (in my humble opinion of course). If you are on-campus, this is a better solution as the one below may not work.
2) If you really prefer to stay with Internet Explorer, then take the following steps (these instructions come from the library catalogue vendor's technical support department):
1) Click on the Tools icon (a
small cog in the upper right hand corner of IE's Window).
2) Select "Internet options" from the list that comes up.
3) Now click on the "Security" tab that comes up in the new
"Internet options" window.
4) Please now click on the "Custom level..." button.
5) The window "Security Settings - Internet Zone" should now be open.
6) Please scroll just about all the way down to find the "Scripting"
section.
7) The "Active scripting" radio button will currently either be set
to "Disable" or "Prompt" neither is desirable and will
cause the issue as described. Please set it to "Enable".
8) Finally click on the "OK" button twice to bring you back to IE
and try the library catalogue again

Three things
We are now entering the Dreaded Exam Period (cue rising organ music). The Dreaded Exam Period means three things:
1) Fines double for the duration of the exam period. Instead of €0.60 and €1.50, fines on overdue material will be €1.20 and €3.00. This is not a cynical revenue generating exercise by the library, this is a genuine attempt to keep books in circulation and deter students from hogging texts that are in demand.
2) We open Sundays from 11am to 5pm. We also open Good Friday and Easter Monday 11am to 5pm. A separate post will appear in a day or two with details of DBS building opening hours during the Easter Weekend.
3) In response to the increased number of queries: Most previous years' exam papers can be on Moodle at this link. You will need to login to access it. Actually, just checking on Moodle there and I see that the link is prominently displayed in the site news section. Exam papers are split by category - undergraduate arts, undergraduate business, postgraduate arts, postgraduate business, law and ICM/DBS diplomas/Springboard courses. I stress,the papers are you looking for are probably there, but not necessarily.

St Patrick's Weekend - Library closure
During
St. Patrick’s week-end, the two libraries will be closed from Saturday 17th
March 2012 until Monday 19th March 2012. The library services will resume on Tuesday
20th March 9am in AS library and 9.30am in DS Library.
The
opening arrangements for all DBS Buildings are as follow:

Palgrave MacMillan March Madness - redux
Just like last year...
I feel I should be shouting this in the style of an annoying television advertisement:
For the month of March, the academic publishers Palgrave McMillan are offering free and unrestricted access to over 60 ejournals, including such titles as the Journal of the Operational Research Society, Journal of International Business Studies, IMF Economic Review and Feminist Review. A full list of all their title can be found here This giveaway ends on March 31. I'm sure terms and conditions apply, though it doesn't actually say that.

WARC, Westlaw and Moodle
One upon a time two of our electronic resources, Warc and Westlaw were available to students through Moodle. Then they weren't. Now they are back on Moodle, hopefully to stay. I offer sincere apologies for the length of time this has taken.

Another Zotero Update
Crickey, you wait months for a blog posts and then a number greater than one come along practically simultaneously. I'm bored writing about JSTOR (I'm not really), so I'll write about Zotero, as there are two interesting developments on that front.
The first is the release of ZotPad, which is the more astute of you will have correctly deduced is an app that brings Zotero functionality to your iPad. It is limited in that as yet, it provides read-only access to data and attachments stored on the Zotero server and allows the user to browse items by libraries and collections. Downloading and viewing the following file types is supported: PDF, MS Office , iWork , RTF, plain text, csv, and images. You will also need a Zotero account and to have stored your data on the Zotero server (which may well be a safer storage place than your PC or laptop. Zotpad will cost you $5.99 (yes $) if you feel that that this app is the thing for you.
Perhaps of more significance is the release of Zotero 3.0, the first version of Zotero that is not dependent on Firefox. Zotero 3.0 will work standalone or can integrate into Google Chrome and Apple Safari. It will, of course, work in Firefox if that's what you prefer. The release also has some new features, including deduplication, better word processor integration and greater compatibility with other reference management software. You can download Zotero 3.0 for Windows, Mac and Linux, and I for one will be downloading Zotero 3.0 after I finish typing this.

JSTOR Ireland Collection
See, I said, I'd write another post about JSTOR. I am very pleased to write that we now have access to JSTOR's Ireland Collection, an interdisciplinary collection of material covering the arts, humanities,and sciences. The Ireland Collection contains around 75 journals, including some current journals and some that stopped publication in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. There may also be the odd monograph and some manuscript pages. There's a title list here, which should also make its way on to our A to Z journal titles list sometime soon.

JSTOR Trial
Happy New Year! Gosh, we've been quiet recently. I like to think that is because the Library is a well-oiled machine that does not require much input. You, of course, may have a different view.
Anyway, this is a short post to say that we have a trial of more JSTOR material. For the next two weeks we will have access to JSTOR Arts and Sciences collections IX and X. These will be available primarily on-campus only (this is is the nature of trials, I'm afraid) though you should be able to access these collections through the search box on the library home page or the advanced search page. Unfortunately, they will not be accesible through Athens.
